He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” – John 8:23
Last Sunday my pastor preached on the verse above. Today I’ll share the notes I took, as I think this is such an important subject Christians need to understand.
We can learn two things from this verse: Jesus was never of this world. We were of this world.
Let’s talk about us for a minute. The difference between being and not being of this world can be described in one word: belief. In this verse Jesus is telling us that unless we believe in him, we will die in our sins. We cannot be “born again” without believing that Jesus came and died and rose to take our sins away. We were from below. We were sinful. We were of this world. But Jesus came and saved us. Now we have been born again. Now we are not of this world.
Once we are born again our origin, identity, and mission change.
Origin: This World
Indentity: Just Another Person
Mission: Serving our desires and thinking about ME
Origin: Born again
Identity: Child of the King
Mission: Reveal the Father
Where origin, identity, and mission change, others see Jesus in us. They see that we are changed, that we are born again.
Jesus was never of this world. He didn’t inherit sin nature from Mary, his mother. Why? Because the Holy Spirit + Mary = Jesus. Not Mary + other human male = Jesus. Jesus was human, but he was also God. That is His origin.
His Identity is God’s Son, not a son of Adam.
His mission was to create a pathway for those who are born again to get to God. He made a way for us to get to heaven. And thank God that He completed this mission!
